FAQ

  • Do I need to have a permit to take Driver Education?

No, but you do have to be at least 15 years old. Effective November 1, 2012, students who have COMPLETED the driver education program with Alert Driving School before getting a permit will have the written test waived when they go to the DPS to get their permit (student must present to DPS their CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION, this is not the contract). However, they can obtain a permit by presenting the CONTRACT that they receive once they have completed the 10 hour classroom requirement (no driving required at this point) but will be required to take the written test. The written test maybe taken the day after the 10 hour classroom requirement is completed. (20 Questions/Multiple Choice and make a 75% to pass). To get your permit test waived, you must complete the 10 hour Driver’s Education Class and your 6 hours of in car, behind the wheel instruction prior to getting your permit (the day you turn 15 1/2 is the earliest this can take place).

Do I have to go to Department of Public Safety (DPS) when I turn 16 to take my drive test?

No, effective November 1, 2012 Alert Driving School is able to administer the STATE ROAD EXAM by appointment. AlertDS is able to administer the state road exam virtually anytime…evenings and weekends (we are not limited to DPS hours of operation nor are we limited by weather, although we will cancel if snow or ice is present on our route for safety reasons). We have 2 DPS Certified Driver’s License Examiners on staff and a former examiner of 8 years as an instructor.

Do my parents need to accompany me when I take my drive test?

No, the following Parent Affidavits will need to be completed to allow us to take students (using one of our valet service packages) to test without their parents. This prevents parents from taking off work and waiting in lines at DPS/Tag Office all day.

    50hr. Drive Test Affidavit

Do I need to have a permit to drive with an instructor?

You only need to have one if you are 18 or older and have not completed our Driver’s Education Class. Otherwise you do not need a permit to drive with AlertDS. However, you must have a permit to drive with someone at home. We recommend everyone get a permit at 15 1/2. You may wish to refer to our Adult FAQs Page.

Do I have to finish the class and all my drives to get my permit?

No, you only have to finish the driver education class. You have one year to finish all of your drives. Effective November 1, 2012, students who have COMPLETED the driver education program with AlertDS before getting a permit will have the written test waived when they go to the DPS to get their permit (student must present to DPS their CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION, this is not the contract). To get your permit test waived, you must complete the 10 hour Driver’s Education Class and 6 hours Behind-The-Wheel, in car instruction prior to getting the permit (the day the student turns 15 1/2 is the earliest that this can take place.  A student under 18 years of age MUST have their permit a full 6 months before they are able to take the “State Road Test.”

Do I need to practice driving on my own time in addition to my drive time with Alert Driving School?

Yes practice on your own. If you do not practice, you will not learn the skills necessary to master the tasks. We recommend you practice as much as possible on your own time (with a permit) while you are taking lessons with us. The Department of Public Safety requires 50 hours of driving with a parent before a teen can get his/her license. The associated affidavit is located here DPS Affidavit.

When do I do the 6 hours driving time?

After you complete the classroom time, the driving instruction is done in 2 hour sessions. On 3 different days, you will drive 2 hours with one on one instruction. Driving sessions are scheduled at your convenience. This allows you to customize your student’s training schedule. The driving time must be complete before taking the state road exam giving you six months if you so choose.

How do I schedule my 3 driving times?

Parent or student will schedule the 3 drives on our website (student portal), once you have signed up for class on our website you will receive your user name and password.  You are able to begin scheduling your drives after the completion of the 2nd day of the 10 hour classroom.  If you do not receive a user name and password after signing up for class, first check your spam then email and request your user name and password. (no phone calls necessary to schedule drives, however, if you have any questions feel free to call anytime).

When can I take the written test?

You may take the written test to obtain a learner’s permit at the age of 15 1/2 if you are attending a driver education course. The written test can be taken the day following the completion of the 10 hour Driver’s Education Class.

    How quickly can I finish?

The finish time depends upon when your driving times and class times are completed. The class times are scheduled, however, students schedule their own drive time. We cannot determine when you will be finished, but we will work with you to help you make this happen in a timely manner (school, work, weather and other factors impact completion of your Driver’s Education).

How long do I have to get my program finished?

You have one year from the day of class to complete your drive time and take your driving test. If over one year, a re-instatement fee of $50 will be charged.

Do I get an insurance reduction for taking driver’s education?

Most companies do honor driver’s education programs if they are state certified (we are state certified). Please check with your insurance company for verification. We will show you in the parent meeting how to pay for the course in a matter of months with additional insurance discounts.

I am in school everyday so how can I take the course and do the drive times?

All of our classes and drive times are scheduled around public school hours. During the school year we have weekend and/or evening classroom sessions. During the summer and fall, winter, and spring breaks we will schedule daytime classes. This schedule goes for drive times as well. We are open year-round!

Can I, as a parent, contact my son or daughter during their drive time or can they call me?

Yes, we have phones in all of our cars. You may call our office for the phone number or ask the instructor at time of pick-up.

If I am scheduled to drive, how do I know if my in-car instruction has been cancelled due to inclement weather?

You might not get a call from our office, however we will post on the Alert Driving School Facebook page letting everyone know if there have been any cancellations.

Do you offer gift certificates for your programs?

  • The training we offer for those 18 and older is obviously different from what we are required to provide for our younger students. The State of Oklahoma does NOT require that license applicants 18 and older attend classroom training or take any specified number of behind-the-wheel lessons. Therefore, we tailor your training to meet your individual needs.

How many lessons will be needed?

This may vary as each student progresses at a different rate or at a different skill level when they start their training. However most of our students are beginners and for these students we normally schedule 3 sessions. The first session would be the introductory lesson and the 3rd is the road test appointment session when the student becomes licensed upon passing the road test.

Your rate of progress will depend on a variety of factors including:

    • Student Motivation
    • Good Hand-Eye Coordination.
    • How well you take direction.
    • How closely you schedule your lessons together.
    • And especially…how often you practice between lessons.

I’m not a beginner. I’m much more experienced and just want to take the road test. Can you help me with that?

Yes. If a student is certain they’ve progressed beyond the beginner’s skill level we schedule an evaluation lesson to determine how best we can meet their specific training needs. The evaluation lesson serves two purposes. It allows the instructor to make a professional evaluation of what training is required while allowing the student to evaluate the performance of the instructor.

Do you offer pick-up and drop-off service?

Yes, we offer Driver’s Ed packages that include Valet (pick-up/drop-off service) both for the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving as well as on Driver’s License Test Day.

Can I take lessons on weekends?

Yes, we offer training six to seven days a week. (We are closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.)

How much are the lessons and how do I pay for them?

See our Driver’s Ed Page for more information, we do take Cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover & American Express.

    What does the training cover?

Alert Driving School training covers all city, suburban and highway driving situations as well as defensive driving techniques. Our goal is to not only prepare you to pass the licensing road test but to aid you in becoming a very skilled and safe driver overall.

Does your school help with road testing when I get my license?

Yes. We are Designated Driver’s License Examiners meaning we can give you the “State Road Test” AKA the driver’s license drive test.  We do so by appointment, no need to go wait in line at DPS.  We also offer other testing services.

    Do you offer training certificates?

Yes. At the end of your training you can receive an Alert Driving School Certificate, upon your request, stating the hours you have completed during the course of your training.

Can I cancel a lesson without penalty?

Yes. However, Alert Driving School policy states: “If for any reason you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment, we require that you call Alert Driving School a minimum of 24 hours in advance. If 24 hours notice is not given, you will be charged the full fee for the lesson. In case of emergencies, documentation will be required.”

If I am scheduled to drive, how do I know if my in-car instruction has been cancelled due to inclement weather?

You might not get a call from our office, however we will post on our Facebook page (like our Facebook Page: facebook.com/alertdrivingschoolok) letting everyone know if there have been any cancellations.

Do you offer gift certificates for your programs?

Yes, we do. You will receive a colorful certificate with the student’s name and program of choice. Call today!
